Microsoft has revealed more details about its upcoming revamp of the Xbox One, currently known as Project Scorpio.
The console will be able to run games in 4K and Microsoft is promising that it will be the most powerful ever, eclipsing the abilities of Sony's PS4 Pro.
Revealing the details of the new console to Eurogamer's Digital Foundry, Microsoft demoed just one game - a Forza Motorsport demo - running in 4K and at 60 frames per second.
The gaming site said performance was "remarkable", with the console's additional power bringing benefits for games running in high definition as well as 4K.
Project Scorpio, first unveiled at last year's E3, is the console's codename and is due to be released this autumn. No price has been announced, although estimates sit at around £400.
The console will have eight custom CPU cores running at 2.3 GHz, 40 GPU units at 1172 MHz and 12GB of RAM, specifications that put it well ahead of the original Xbox One and ahead of the PS4 Pro.
This will allow it to run at a speed of six teraflops per second - a measure of computational power. In comparison, the Xbox One runs at 1.32 teraflops per second and the PS4 Pro at 4.12.
Microsoft says all existing Xbox One and backwards compatible Xbox 360 games will run more smoothly and load faster, and that developers will be able to upgrade existing games to 4K.
More details are set to be revealed by Microsoft in June at the E3 gaming conference.
Microsoft and Sony sold roughly equal numbers of their last console generation, the Xbox 360 and PS3, but Sony has steamed ahead with the PS4. It has sold more than 50 million consoles compared to around half that for the Xbox One.
Both companies released slimline versions of their consoles last year, the PS4 Slim and Xbox One S.
